Sunday Salon for 14 January 2024
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
So cold. The predicted low for tonight is -6°. There are many winters when St. Louis doesn’t get as low as 0°, much less below that. I stocked up with groceries last week and don’t intend to leave the house again until it’s above freezing.
What are you reading?
I complained last week that I wasn’t sure about continuing with Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus due to the distanced narration. I stuck with it long enough to get enthralled. That’s not quite the same as liking it, but close enough to call it an engaging read and be glad that I’ve joined the throngs who read it. The ending was satisfying.
I’m listening to The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. It almost has the opposite problem. The story sucks you right into the main character’s life, but it’s such a dismal life that I started plotting an escape. I stuck with it, mostly because it’s read by Carey Mulligan, who I adore (Far from the Madding Crowd, Suffragette, Collateral, The Dig, and My Grandparents’ War). All was forgiven once we reached the Midnight Library.
What are you watching?
As part of Jane Austen January, I watched Pride and Prejudice (2005) with Keira Knightley. Since last week’s post on filming locations worked well, I did it again for this week’s British Isles Friday post.
What are you doing?
My week was one of continuously worsening cold symptoms. For the first couple of days, it was just a sore throat. And then, I started sounding like a frog. And then, the sneezing and runny nose got going. Today, the sixth day since I noticed a symptom, I experience fatigue pretty much any time that I move. I’m happy that I continue to have enough energy to work at my desk — otherwise, I would be very bored.
How are you this fine Sunday?
