Summer #SundaySalon
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
For our first full day of summer, we got our first Extreme Heat Warning of the year. My favorite weather guy is worried about us because we didn’t get a chance to acclimate. Our hot days so far this year were in the mid-80s. Suddenly, we’re going to see days in the upper 90s.
Of particular concern are folks who continue to live in tents or damaged houses after last month’s tornado. The small, nimble organizations were on the ground on the day of the tornado. Now, we’re seeing some more sustainable larger relief operations from nonprofits and government at various levels. But it’s going to be a long time before people are sheltered appropriately.
What are you reading?
We had a terrific discussion of On Juneteenth by Annette Gordon-Reed on Juneteenth. What a wonderful way to honor the day! We had a good turnout, too. I was pleased that we were able to pull it off on a federal holiday when our public library was closed. Fortunately, Kirkwood Historical Society agreed to host us in their 19th-century house-turned-museum. It was a great place for us.
A hold for the latest Nora Roberts novel came through for me, so I’ve been reading Hidden Nature. I’m a little surprised that it was released in the spring given that it’s mostly set in the winter. Nora Roberts has been hit-and-miss for me recently, but this one hit the right spot at the right moment. The setting helps — a lakeside resort community. Reading about winter on a hot day has its appeal, too.
What are you watching or listening to?
We watched Nonnas on Netflix, a movie about a restaurant where the chefs are all Italian grandmothers. The script had some major flaws but the acting was good and it was fun to see a movie that features older people.
What are you doing?
I enjoyed some fantasy travel inspired by Julian of Norwich, who wrote the oldest surviving work known to be by a woman in the English language. Norwich calls itself the City of Stories, a wonderful destination for book bloggers!
How are you this fine Sunday?
