Last week, I took a fantasy trip to Norwich. Tina rediscovered two British books while unpacking: the history book A Bit About Britain by Mike Biles and the Tolkien spoof book Bored of the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon.
Patience is a British crime drama set in York. The title is the name of one of the main characters.
Patience Evans works in the archives of the police, making connections that are only possible if you have access to all the records and a brain that works differently than others. A pillar of support in her life is a support group for autistic adults. Another is her godfather, her father’s best friend, who provided her with a place to stay after her father died.
The other main character is Bea Metcalfe, a detective inspector. Bea has her own problems including a child with behavior difficulties and an ex-husband who has the whole parenting thing down better than she does. Bea recognizes a solution when she sees one and the unique skill set of Patience is definitely a solution.
The first two episodes solve a single mystery. The remaining four episodes each have a mystery of their own. Throughout the series, Patience and Bea improve their abilities to interact with each other, to the benefit of both — personally and professionally.
Radio Times has a lovely interview with the two actors. Ella Maisy Purvis, who plays Patience, was diagnosed as autistic when she was a teenager. Before her diagnosis, she chose acting as her career. She trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Laura Fraser plays Bea who found a burgeoning friendship with Purvis in real life informed their relationship on screen.
Patience originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK. Their Youtube channel had some fun with the promotion. In one video, cast members had to guess whether a funny street name was in the city of York, the surrounding countryside of Yorkshire, or completely made up. In this video, cast members guess what York slang terms mean.
We loved the characters in this series and were sad that it ended in just six episodes. Fortunately, a second season has been announced and filming began in the spring.
York is such a beautiful city. I really enjoyed spending time there, vicariously, through this show. According to Radio Times, many of the exterior shots were filmed in York while interiors and other locations were filmed in Belgium.
Patience is airing on PBS right now, but we streamed all six episodes using our PBS Passport, a benefit of membership in our local PBS station.
