I’ve been reaching for ways to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence that work for me (hint: cage matches didn’t). Here are some things that worked or are working:
- Picturing Independence, an exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum
The Six Degrees of Separation link party that took me through books about America- The British Grand Prix because I am free to be an Anglophile
- Drawing stars and fireworks with red and blue gel pens
- The 2022 docudrama Abraham Lincoln, especially listening to the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inauguration speech
- Heather Cox Richardson’s post from July 3 that quoted the Gettysburg Address
- The radio documentary Dolly Parton’s America (and listening to her music)
- Ezra Klein’s interview with Bryan Stevenson: The America That’s Still Possible
- Our weekly Black Lives Matter vigil
I begin the next 250 years determined to support the American experiment that reaches for a reality that we are all equal in the eyes of our Creator, our laws, and each other.
