Moon Joy #SundaySalon

How’s the weather?

We feel firmly in spring, now. Complete with lots of tree pollens, on and off sun and clouds, and lots of green in the landscape.

I’m not quite ready to take the flannel sheets off the bed because there are still lows in the 40s in the long-term forecast, but it won’t be too much longer that I’ll be ready to switch to cool percale.

What are you reading?

I finished The Picture House Murders by by Fiona Veitch Smith. I really enjoyed the setting of 1920s Newcastle upon Tyne. I have a review already written and scheduled for British Isles Friday.

Next up, my turn at the library came up for One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad. I realize, now, that I had no idea what this is about. I have barely started and it’s making me feel very provincial. I know so little about what it’s like to grow up or live in other parts of the world. I feel like I’m learning on every page. I’m still unsure of the thesis, but the illumination is enough to keep me going.

What are you watching or listening to?

CAPCOM responded to a delighted report from the Artemis II astronauts with the phrase, “copy, moon joy.” That has since been picked up by others to describe the beautiful moments that we saw.

What are you doing?

I think I’ll keep reflecting moon joy for as long as I can get it to last. I’m just old enough to remember the Apollo missions and just young enough to not be able to fully distinguish one from another, but a lot of the memories flooded back this week. Many memories are associated with people who are no longer here but I enjoyed greeting them in my memory and, to whatever unknown extent, sharing this new moon joy with them.

When I was a girl, many of our neighbors and friends worked for NASA. When I first taught school, most of my students’ parents worked for NASA. So I was always a Space Geek, and I still am. Thank you for sharing these videos, Joy! This week you are Moon Joy! lol

Re: One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This and Gaza, it’s funny; I was involved in protests as a student (during my first degree) against my university investing in arms dealing to Israel… and yet I didn’t understand the situation very well at all, and it’s only in recent years that I have.

My mum has always been obsessed with the moon and the Apollo missions, so she’s been very excited this past week. She was texting me practically every step of the launch sequence even though I was watching it too, haha. It’s been lovely to watch.

I love how open you are with your reading choices. I hear so many saying oh it’s to depressing.. I’d rather not know and I want to shake them. It’s you not wanting to know.. your ignorance that put us in this mess. So it is wonderful when someone is so ready to learn.

I do believe the Artemis mission was just what we needed, collectively, during these troubling times. Beauty, joy & perspective have been few and far between and I, too, will be reflecting the moon joy for as long as I can.
