Last week, I took a fantasy visit to the seaside resort town of Margate, England. Tina reviewed Meredith, Alone by Claire Alexander, a healing story about a woman who is unable to leave her house in Glasgow but is supported by a number of people and situations, like an on-line job and a friend who visits with her children.
Beyond Paradise is a spin-off of Death in Paradise, a long-running humorous detective show set in the Caribbean. Death in Paradise accommodates a constantly changing cast of characters and I’ve enjoyed many seasons: Seasons 1-3, Seasons 4 & 5, Seasons 6 & 7, Seasons 8-10, and Seasons 11 & 12.
Beyond Paradise follows Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall), the British detective who starred in Seasons 3 through 6 of Death in Paradise, as he resumes his life in England. His love interest, Martha Lloyd (played by Sally Bretton), wants to move back to her hometown of Shipton Abbott, so DI Goodman takes a job as detective there.
The crimes for each episode are amusing, including a stolen painting of a horse and the presence of crop circles. DI Goodman’s methods are puzzling to his new colleagues, especially Detective Sergeant Esther Williams.
A moving season-long story arc centers around the relationship between Humphrey and Martha. It wraps things up nicely, but I’m very much hoping for a Season Two to learn more about the other characters who work in the police station in Shipton Abbott.
I want Season Two to introduce us to DS Esther Williams’ daughter. We heard about her several times, so we know that she’s 15 and that Esther is raising her on her own. What is it like to be a working single mum of a teenager in Shipton Abbott?
Fortunately, a new season was announced in the spring and will include a Christmas special. That should be fun!
I watched Beyond Paradise on Amazon Prime with the BritBox add-on. It doesn’t seem to be out on DVD, yet.
