I didn’t quite meet my goal to finish four books to support my resolutions in January, but I came close!
Resolution 1: Understand what’s going on in my country. I plan to read The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America, by George Packer with others at The Hibernator’s Library. I completed Part 1 and my thoughts echoed others who are reading it — I’m not really getting the thesis, so far. I hope things become more clear as we read the other two parts together. I finished Hamilton: The Revolution this week and that helped me understand the past and present of my country, so I’ll consider that a win for this resolution.
Resolution 2: End the disproportionate suspensions of black and brown youth from schools. My in-person book club discussed Pushout by Monique W. Morris a couple of weeks ago. We learned a lot — check out my review.
Resolution 3: Figure out how non-patriarchal, non-hierarchical groups work. I read and reviewed The Empowerment Manual: A Guide for Collaborative Groups by Starhawk for this one. Very helpful for anyone involved in groups — I’d include family in this, too, so practically everyone could get something out of this book.
Resolution 4: Use pictures to deepen my experiences and improve my communication. I finished Blah, Blah, Blah: What to do When Words Don’t Work by Dan Roam and reviewed it. Check out my post for the picture I drew to use in a meeting.
