Potager du Roi for Weekend Cooking
I wrote about the Potager du Roi, the kitchen garden of the king at Versailles, on Monday with photos: Potager du Roi, Versailles, France. But I forgot to mention something that the Weekend Cooking crowd will want to know. What happens to all the food?
All that fresh produce, including lots of fruit from those amazing espaliered and shaped trees, is sold at the little entrance shop. The proceeds provide a significant source of income to support the work of the Potager du Roi (the official website is in French, but Google translate does a reasonable job on it). So, the next time you’re in Versailles during peach or apple season, you know where to shop!
Weekend Cooking is brought to us each week by Beth Fish Reads. Check out her Saturday morning posts for links to more culinary adventures around the web.
You have a whole week plus full of wonderful photos. This trellis is beautiful too.
What a trip! I’m still catching up on your posts.
How awesome that those kitchen gardens are still in use today. I need to read all your travel posts, I am sure there is lots to discover.
That is so lovely- thanks for sharing this.
Oh wow! This was really interesting. I just went back and read a bunch of your posts. It appears we share a lot of loves–books, food, France! Ahhh, la bonne vie. 🙂
Wouldn’t that be a wonderful place to shop!
I will get to Versailles eventually, and will keep this in mind. I need to read through your posts…
Good to know, Joy. I visited Villandry which also has an enormous ornamental vegetable garden and they make sure it doesn’t go to waste as well. Cheers
We also went to Villandry — another impressive potager.
