This week’s prompt is: Do you use a book’s synopsis for your review?

I don’t use the publisher’s synopsis in my book reviews.

Writing my own summary of a book helps me gather my thoughts about it, so it’s often the first thing I write — kind of a warm-up.

I don’t like to give spoilers in my reviews. Often my summaries give fewer spoilers than the publisher’s synopsis. A publisher’s aim is to sell the book. My aim, as a trained librarian, is to match the right book with the right reader. I want to reveal just enough in my reviews for you to know if this book is right for you.

How about you? Do you put the publisher’s synopsis in your book reviews?

  1. If I know I’m going to read a book, like if it’s part of a series or I already know the basic premise, I don’t bother reading the publisher’s synopsis. Especially with the cozy mysteries I read, I find that they give away too many spoilers. I don’t even like to know who the victim is, so I refrain from putting that information in my reviews. Just like the culprit, I want to be able to try and guess who that will be.

  3. I figure the reader needs to know something about the book before I give my opinions on the plot, characters, setting, etc. So I usually write a few sentences of synopsis.

  4. Most of the time I write my own synopsis. Like you, I try not to give away any spoilers, but at the same time — I try to write enough of what happens so that I have a record of the book and what happened for myself. So I can remember the book years from now.
