How’s the weather?
We’ve been under an extreme heat warning since Monday. It was supposed to end yesterday but we got to 104 degrees today. It’s going to be a relief to have highs in the 90s in the coming week!
What are you reading?
I started The Midnight Train by Matt Haig (sequel to The Midnight Library) weeks ago, but I had a lot going on and the library took it back before I was done. Now, I’m reading it with nothing else so I can finish it before the next due date.
What are you watching?
We’ve been watching all the practice sessions for this weekend’s Formula 1 race in Manza, Italy. This is a historic track from the beginning of auto racing — I’ve loved learning about the history. We’re looking forward to the race tomorrow.
What are you listening to?
The podcast Our Town is mesmerizing — all about a tiny town in Tennessee that gets targeted by a bunch of Christian Nationalists with money to set up a real estate venture for themselves and like-minded people. They thought that the town would welcome them. But it turns out that strong Southern women and the people who love them aren’t that easy to convince that women should be subordinate.
I’ve been paying attention to the AI story about rogue agents committing crimes. This interview on The Daily was an easy-to-understand deep dive into what happened and what it all means: “A.I. Is Outsmarting Its Creators”
What are you doing?
We just held our last-ever Black Lives Matter vigil and celebrated afterwards with a party at a park pavilion. It was a hot day for that! But, we had a remarkably good turnout. A lot of people wanted one last chance to connect. We have been doing this for nearly 12 years but no longer have the capacity to keep it going.
It’s a little sad for those of us who have been a part of it for a long time. When we started, shortly after the death of Michael Brown in our county, there weren’t that many ways in the St. Louis area to declare that Black Lives Matter. Since then, a number of organizations have formed and are doing terrific work. We’ll funnel our energy in their direction.
