Last week, I shared my fascination with the YouTube channel, Urban Sketch Emma. Marg liked that The Sweet Life Cafe by Helen Rolfe was set in the Channel Islands, but not during WWII, for a change.

Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is a three-episode adaptation of the The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie, showing on Netflix.

The Seven Dials Mystery was published in 1929 and brings back several characters and an important location from The Secret of Chimneys, her 1925 publication that I celebrated last year on the 100th anniversary.

In the adaptation that I watched last year, the estate named Chimneys was played by Hatfield House. In this Netflix show, Chimneys was played by Badminton House in Gloucestershire.

The game of badminton was named after this house, although there is some contention about whether it was invented there. The story goes that the children needed an active winter game that wouldn’t damage the valuable art work in the house.

Badminton House has been the home of the Dukes and Duchesses of Beaufort since the late 17th-century. It currently hosts regular outdoor events, including the annual Badminton Horse Trials held there since 1949. The house can be rented for weddings and parties and has been the film location for other popular movies and shows, including Bridgerton.

Besides the magnificent location, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials boasts an all-star cast. We enjoyed the performance of young actor Mia Sasha McKenna-Bruce in the lead role as Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent. She was in the 2022 version of Persuasion. I loved watching Helena Bonham Carter as her mother and Martin Freeman as the professional detective, constantly harassed by Bundle’s energetic attempts to solve the mystery.

I think anythign with Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman would be worth watching. I will look out for this one.
I brought you a book by an Northern Irish author and I ought to have mentioned another book I posted about – Wandering Souls – w
had much of the book set in London.

We watched this series a few nights ago and thoroughly enjoyed it! Martin Freeman is a favorite (loved him in Sherlock) and of course, Helena Bonham Carter is marvelous. But my favorite was Mia McKenna-Bruce. What spunk! And the setting and scenery were wonderful to watch, especially when they were on the train.

I don’t have Netflix but watching this adds to my reasons to include it in my streaming. Eons ago I did a bus tour of the Cotswolds and as we drove along our guide pointed out Badminton house. Of course, it was too off the road to really see, but after that I kept hearing it in reference to Charles and Camilla. Well, the Christie book is on my winter pile and I have the Britbox (or Acorn?) version — so at least I’ll see one!
