Last week, I reviewed a television adaptation of The Secret of Chimneys, an Agatha Christie novel that was published 100 years ago. Jeanie read a bunch of books in August with British authors and settings.
The documentary Agatha Christie: 100 Years of Poirot and Miss Marple was released in 2020 to honor the 100th anniversary of the publication of Christie’s first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. It’s currently streaming on BritBox.
The show tells the story of Christie and her two most famous characters by commenting on ten of her most popular novels.
There are spoilers, or at least hints of them. They do try to keep the surprises at least partially obscured while still discussing how good Christie was at constructing them. Fortunately, my mind doesn’t hold on to details of murder mysteries, so I will have forgotten by the time I get around to reading these or watching the adaptations.
Besides the interviews of authors, actors, and experts, we get to see montages of the kinds of villages and houses that featured heavily in Christie’s books. These are fun visuals for Anglophiles.
I liked this documentary, but I bet it would be even more fun if you recently read (or watched an adaptation of) each of the ten books that were discussed. So, I collected them in case anyone wants to take on that project:
- The Mysterious Affair at Styles
- The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
- The Murder at the Vicarage
- Murder on the Orient Express
- Death on the Nile
- And Then There Were None
- Five Little Pigs
- A Murder is Announced
- The Pale Horse
- Curtain
What do you think? Is that a project that sounds fun for you?
