  1. America’s history with POC is horrific. And the current administration is adding insult to injury. I applaud your focus on the topic of race in America. It’s a tough subject, and one I seldom have the stomach for.

  2. We had a great turnout for the discussion of James in our book club, and everyone had a lot to say about the book. I also read Huck Finn after I read James, and I went on to read the recently published biography of Mark Twain by Ron Chernow, too. I’m glad your discussion went so well. Thank you for all you do to make our world a better place, Joy.

  3. This sounds like a really fascinating book (and great for a book club discussion). I’m not sure it’s entirely my thing, but I might give it a shot anyway… sometimes it’s nice to go outside of one’s usual comfort zone. Thanks for writing about it!

  4. Thank you for reminding me about James, Joy. It is on my TBR, I just haven’t prioritized it yet. I’ve only heard good things about it and look forward to diving in when things settle down a bit here.

  5. I actually liked James more than the original, although it has been quite a while since I read Huck Finn.

Interesting that your hometown is near Hannibal–I’ve always wanted to take a trip that follows the Mississippi from end to end. It’s such a huge part of the American experience.
