How’s the weather?

We jumped into summer heat and humidity last week. Also, the plantain has started pollinating, making it pretty miserable to be outside if you’re sensitive. I’ve got an early morning walk scheduled with a friend today, which is one way to beat the heat and still get some exercise.

What are you reading?

I’m continuing my project to read Alexis Hall’s books for Pride Month. I finished Boyfriend Material and immediately started reading the sequel Husband Material. I laugh out loud at the dialogue, except the jokes that go over my head because I wasn’t a British teenager in the 90s.

What are you watching?

Netflix added the first three Airport movies to their streaming service recently. I’m sure we weren’t the only people to make a binge of that. The fun is in the nostalgia of when air travel was glamorous and in seeing the actors from our childhood. Airport, Airport 1975, and Airport ’77 have huge casts. There’s a game to play — spot the Golden Age Hollywood actress. Helen Hayes won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Airport. These are not great movies, but they are fun to watch.

For some reason, Netflix isn’t offering the fourth movie in the series, The Concorde … Airport ’79. The library has a DVD set with all four movies. I requested that so that we could see the fourth one.

What are you doing?

I visited two Farmers Markets last week. Peak-season strawberries don’t last very long around here, so I wanted to get them while they’re bursting with red sweetness.

What are you writing?

I put up two book review posts:

Beautiful Country: A Memoir by Qian Julie Wang on the last day of AAPI Heritage month
Winner Bakes All series by Alexis Hall on the second day of Pride Month

I also got back into working on my novel. I made the rookie mistake of spending more time reading writing books than actually writing. I plan to correct that in the coming week.

Strawberry season is here and I am loving it! I found our first red ripe one in the garden yesterday morning. It was delicious!

I have gotten distracted from writing my novel—focusing on finding just the right notebook or app, researching the novel, setting up my writing space—so many times in the past. I’m trying to focus on writing itself and not concerning myself with the actual quality of what I write. My plan is to have a novel completed by the end of October.

The temperatures soar here in the summer, but we almost always have a good breeze coming off the Gulf. I’m looking forward to starting my swimming class tomorrow.

I hope you had a nice walk! The weather here has been so nice. A little gloomy in the mornings with the marine layer setting in, but the afternoons are sunny and bright. Not too hot. I am not going to hold my breath though for a mild summer. I imagine it will warm up soon enough.

I have heard such great things about Alexis Hall’s books. I need to give them a try. I hope your writing goes well and you are able to get back into it more.

Yes, this time of year it’s best to get exercise over with early or you end up having to go real late to beat the heat. Glad to hear you’re enjoying Hall’s books. I’ve seen a lot of good things about them!

We were having beautiful summer weather in CT last week, then slipped right back into cool weather over the weekend. No complaints though, still better than FL humidity! Sounds like your group had a good discussion of Beautiful Country.I really enjoyed that book, too. Hope you have a good week.

Yes to strawberries! Strawberry season here is not for a couple of weeks yet, but it is always great. The local ones just have a super flavor that doesn’t travel from California (though in the Santa Barbara Farmers’ Market, I’ve had great ones, so it’s really the travel time and ripeness that does it).
