Photo Fun with Christmas Lights
I posted conventional shots of Garden Glow, the Christmas light show at the Missouri Botanical Garden on Wednesday. For the Saturday Snapshot crowd, I wanted to post my experimental photos of the lights.
I learned this technique in a class a couple of years ago, but this was the first time I had a chance to try it. Set the camera for a long shutter speed, say, half a second. Then, deliberately move the camera while the shutter is open. It’s like painting with light!

A Christmas tree in front of a low fence with lights. I liked the tree on the right in the background of this shot.
I had the most fun with a display of three-inch diameter glass ball lights. You can see them in the photo of the Climatron that I posted on Wednesday. A bunch are staked into the ground on either side of a path and many more are hanging from the tree canopy overhead.

Woah, those are cool photos! Especially the last one š
The pics are a lot of fun – I really like the one in the tunnel!
Gorgeous photo play! Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.
Ha! What fun! Can’t wait to try this out! I love the third shot of the tree and the circular whirl effect! Yo

Meant to finish with … You are too cool!
These are terrific pics. I’m so jealous and inspired by your photography class and skills. Here’s Mine
Awesome pictures!!
Great photos! Our Botanical Gardens has a light show too – I hope to check it out this year!
What lovely shots. Really like the last colourful one. I am going to see if I can try that technique.
I like your paintings with light. Very festive.
Amazing photos, Joy.
Very Cool!
Great pictures! I’ve had pictures sort of like that….unfortunately, I wasn’t trying for it (and they didn’t look as good as yours)
Fabulous photos! My husband experimented in a similar way one night at a friend’s place. She had the field across from her home set up with agility obstacles. Lights were strung over the tunnels and jumps, so that owner and dog could see the course. While most of us just felt frustrated at the lack of proper light, he had fun taking wacky photos.
