Snowmageddon #SundaySalon
Happy Sunday! Sunday Salon is hosted by Deb at ReaderBuzz. Check out her post and the links to see what other bloggers have been up to in the last week.
How’s the weather?
Like much of the country, the St. Louis area is experiencing severe winter weather. We started on Friday with frigid temperatures and wind chills that were below 0° all day long. The snow started earlier on Saturday than predicted. The heaviest snow is expected overnight Saturday into Sunday.
My favorite local forecaster says we’ll get 8″-12″ total. That’s a lot for us! It will help that there were a couple of days warning and that this is a weekend event. We aren’t going to get much help from warming temperatures for more than a week, though.
I’m determined to create a cozy, snow-day vibe for the next four days. But I will be fighting weather anxiety to achieve that.
What are you reading?
Our next book for book club is Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America by Michael Harriot. I’m not getting all the humor being both too old and too white, but enough to get a rueful chuckle, occasionally. I am learning from the history. I’ve read a lot of history that attempts to correct what’s missing from our education, so I’ve known the bare facts of these stories but this digs into more fascinating details.
My hold came through for Blind Date with a Werewolf by Patricia Briggs, which was recommended as a Christmas book. Given the weather, it’s working for me to add a little festivity to the month.
What are you watching or listening to?
My British Isles Friday post was about a YouTube channel that I enjoy because it gives me a virtual way to take walks in English villages: Urban Sketch Emma.
I watched KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix. My inner 12-year-old was charmed! I’m pleased to be a little bit knowledgeable about pop culture, given that I’m old.
We enjoyed Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials on Netflix, a short three-episode series. I’ll plan to review it in a week or two.
We started watching Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount and are looking forward to the rest of the series. There are currently three episodes available of an expected ten-episode season.
What are you doing?
At this very moment, I’m trying to avoid video of yet another government-sponsored murder in Minneapolis. I don’t need to see it to believe it. I’m trying to hold on to the images from yesterday of tens of thousands of Minnesotans marching in freezing cold weather in protest.
I’m paying attention to how ordinary citizens are organizing and to how outsiders can help. I’m pleased to say that Naomi Kritzer’s blog provided two terrific posts with details on these topics. So, this also serves as a model for how bloggers can contribute to the work.
I learned from Naomi that there is a difference between Community Defense and protest, even though media tends to confuse the two. Yesterday’s massive march was a protest. The people blowing whistles, writing down license plate numbers, and bearing witness to the actions of the government against the community are engaged in Community Defense. Both actions (and many more) are needed.
Are you impacted by this giant winter storm? How are you coping?
