  1. Thanks for the review – this novel is definitely on my TBR list!
    Incidentally, the N word wasn’t originally a derogatory term in Britain – I think it came from the N* Minstrel bands of the Edwardian area, and seems to have been widely used in place of ‘African’. My mother bought n* brown stockings during the 1930s, and they would not have used an offensive term to sell items.
    As you say, many people in Britain, including my mother, had not seen a black person prior to WW2, when Empire (and later American) troops arrived in Britain.
