Amistad #FilmReview #BriFri — 4 Comments

  1. Enjoyed your review and enjoyed the movie. I had my son read the book as part of a homeschool history assignment. The film had some comical moments to bring a bit of levity to a serious topic. You are spot on about the “happy slave” usual offerings from hollywood and the need for more historical realism.
I’m not surprised you didnt’ find any books on Sugar in the Blood, the British, like the Americans, like to hide their participation in the human trade.

  2. Thanks for the shout out Joy! Today’s British Isles post is about tuning in to Wimbledon. I’ve not seen Amistad either; I’m thinking it might be because my son was four when it came out and we weren’t seeing a lot of grown up movies. Still, there’s been plenty of time to catch up since; thanks for the reminder.
And btw, what ‘happy slaves’ movies are you talking about? Is that really a trend? I haven’t seen Django Unchained but there were plenty of unhappy slaves in 12 Years a Slave. I agree, the whole notion of ‘happy slaves’ is downright disturbing.

  3. I went and saw the movie when it first came out. I was in high school and my friend Katelynn and I decided to go see it. Sadly there were not many people in the theater and I remember one guy falling asleep and snoring really really loudly. I did enjoy the movie thought it feels weird using a word like “enjoy” when you are dealing with such a tough topic.
