  1. Ahhh, the ‘a’ for an ‘o’ is a new one for me. I had a discussion about the dropping of the ‘u’ in America in words like colour & favour, in light of the publishers decision to go with ‘colorless’ on all the editions of Murakami’s latest book.
I think we decided that it was actually a matter of pronunciation – Brits and Aussies say “cullar” (or there abouts) whilst Americans say “culler”. Perhaps its the same with nought (we say “nort” in Aust & I think some Brits say “nowt”) – how do Americans pronounce it?

    • We don’t use the word naught very much in the US. I pronounce it the same as “not” and “knot,” so with a very short o sound. Generally, I’d use the words “zero” or “circle” or “nothing”, depending on what I was going for.

  2. I saw this around the world challenge going around on google+ but I knew that I would be too busy with things happening around here to add even one more thing. It looks like a fun challenge though. Maybe next year . . .

  3. I am British and would say the word nought as if it rhymed with thought. I read this book with my book group a few ago, and must have enjoyed it as I went on to read the next two in the series.
