Why I Heart Thanksgiving — 11 Comments

  1. What a great post, and a lovely memory of Thanksgivings past and your mother Joy. I’m so glad your turkey turned out well that day, and I’m sure each Thanksgiving since.

  2. What a great memory. I had heart surgery at a young age so have always been heart-conscience and yet my mother can never get enough butter! So funny. I’m glad to hear you had a lovely Thanksgiving.

  3. Thanks for sharing your story. While I had cooked chickens since I was a pre-teen, I didn’t make a turkey till I was about 25. My sister was supposed to make the turkey for the party and had it in the fridge thawing, but then she went into labour . oh oh, I knew something was up when she started telling me how to finish the party prep for the next day. She went to hospital and had a beautiful baby girl and we had a perfectly cooked turkey as long as you didn’t mind the neck which I couldn’t get out as the turkey wasn’t quite thawed enough. Now hubby deep fries the turkey and I’m not involved.

  4. What a delightful story, Joy – thanks you so much for sharing it.

When I was growing up we never had turkey for Christmas (we don’t do Thanksgiving here) in our family – my grandmother always cooked three or four chickens and my mother a leg of lamb. I’m planning to cook a turkey for the first time ever this year, and I have to say I’m very nervous about it. But I’ll definitely be heeding your advice to leave out the “butter ball”.
