Book Blogger Community
Wednesday’s topic for Book Blogger Appreciation Week is “What does book blogging mean to you?” For me, it’s all about the book blogging community.
Smaller weekly memes. These are most like weekly meetings at the local coffee shop. You never know how many people will show up — somewhere between ten and thirty, probably, but drawing from a somewhat larger pool of participants. At first, it’s overwhelming, but after awhile, you start to recognize the regulars. Eventually, you start to connect with some of them outside the meme. Here are the ones I occasionally participate in:
- Wondrous Words Wednesday at Bermudaonion’s Weblog
- Weekend Cooking at Beth Fish Reads
- Saturday Snapshots at At Home With Books
- Readers’ Workouts at Joy’s Book Blog
Okay, that last one’s self-serving. And Readers’ Workouts is not just small, it’s tiny — but growing a little every month. Join us each Tuesday for motivation, accountability, and support for being a reader athlete.
Larger weekly memes. These are more like the Happy Hour of the book blogging world. They never stop being overwhelming and you never get to know everyone, but there’s so much energy! The one I usually join is It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? at Book Journey.
Book Blogging events. These are the community festivals with crowds of participants and multiple activities. Besides Book Blogger Appreciation Week, be sure to check out these current or upcoming events:
- Bloggiesta — a big work party for improving our blogs
- Dewey’s Read-a-Thon — 24 hours of reading and blog hopping
- R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril (RIP VII) — two months of scary books and shows
One of my favorite ways lately (well, the last couple of years) is participating in read alongs. I love them!
I’m so thankful for this community 🙂 I’m still in the super new to book blogging arena but everyone has been so fantastic and welcoming. The memes you mentioned are so much fun and a great way to get out there and participate
The Relentless Reader
What a great way to celebrate the blogging community! I don’t participate in many memes, but I like Retro Fridays and Top Ten Tuesdays. Also, I love Bloggiesta and the read-a-thons. Great things happen in the book blog community!
You raise really good points here, Joy! Memes are a great way to make connections with other book bloggers, not mention help with content ideas. I was a lot more active in memes early in my blogging career (ha–I called it a career) than I am now, but I’m starting to participate in them more now again.
I agree with you Joy–it’s all about getting out there and participating. Sure blogging about books can be fun but it doesn’t really hold much weight for me without those of you around me sharing in on the fun.
One of the things I love about Weekend Cooking is how the link list is manageable–I definitely think it makes it easier to “meet” other bloggers which then leads to connections outside of the meme. And I NEED to get my act in gear for Readers Workouts!
I’m allergic to joining in on things, but I love commenting and getting comments. Those you can work into the corners of your day, kind of like how my husband’s grandfather used to say he always had room for ice cream “because it melts down into the cracks.”
My sentiments are exactly the same as yours…it is the community that makes it work.
To me blogging is all about the wonderful bloggers who make it happen.
Stop by to see my post if you like.
Have a fun day.
Elizabeth
