Book Review: The Complete Guide to Growing and Using Sprouts — 11 Comments

  1. I like eating sprouts, but I have always been wary. That’s really why I don’t try to grow/do them myself. I will check out the Sprout People, it does sound like a good source (even though I do prefer books, as well). Thanks for the review 🙂

  2. Humm. I used to grow sprouts all the time but for some reason I got out of the habit. That’s too bad because we, too, eat a ton of salads and I like sprouts on my sandwiches better than I like lettuce.

I wonder if you checked out a government site or a university site if you’d have better luck.

  3. Thanks for this informative post.

I used to eat alfalfa sprouts on my sandwiches years ago and really enjoyed them. But after reading something about the bacteria issue, I got scared and stopped. I know want to read Sprout People, and am off to see if I can get it at my library.

  4. Joy, when the sprouts problem occurred Dr. Andrew Weil said do not eat sprouts unless you cook them. Period. He was being extremely cautious. I don’t think I have bought any since then. Post not a bust. Quite informative. Good luck with your sprouts.

  5. Very interesting post, Joy. You helped us think again about sprouts. I can’t remember the last time I ate them. I used to love them and I miss them. You know, I don’t even think I’ve seen them at the store, even Whole Foods.

  6. I buy bean sprouts when I am making pad thai, but I always cook them, I don’t like them sprinkled on top. Alfalfa sprouts in sandwiches are yucky to me, though I have tried them many times, they get in my teeth. I have tried unknown sprouts at restaurants, but the taste doesn’t work for me. I suppose if I had them more often I would get used to the taste.

I had heard about the problems with them, and recall that you had to be sure where you were getting your seeds as even those were contaminated from some sources. I’m going to the Sprout people website to learn more. Thanks.
